Athlete Spotlight

"Dale is a double threat, he's an excellent football player and a fantastic wrestler. His natual athletisism would let him excell in any sport he put his mind to. I just wish he'd gone out for baseball!" - Coach Billings

"Dale is a great guy on and off the field. He volunteers his time with Big Brothers of WV and helps run sports camps during the summer. He mentors the younger players and can often be seen running extra drills after regular practice. He definately fits the bill of role model." - Coach Linn

In Dale's own words: "I'm fortunate to have been handed down good genes! Haha. My dad played football, my mom played basketball, my older brother was a wrestler, and my younger sister is killing it in cross coutnry. Yeah, no competition at our house!...I chalk my success up to the coaches, both on and off the field. PHS has a great sports program and I'm just glad to be a part of it. As coach Linn always says: Work Hard, Play Hard. Go Slugs!" - Dale Mercer

Athletic Department Head

Varsity Baseball

As head coach, I want to encourage all students to consider trying out for a team. Participating in sports can be an incredibly rewarding experience, helping you to develop teamwork, leadership, and athletic skills. I'm partial to Baseball, a sport that requires focus, dedication, and a love of the game, but it's also a lot of fun! The camaraderie and bonds that are formed through playing on a team are something special, and I know that you'll all find that this season will be a great opportunity to make new friends, challenge yourself, and learn new things. So, if you have an interest in baseball, or just love being part of a team, I highly recommend giving it a try. You never know, you might just surprise yourself with what you're capable of!

Varsity Wrestling

As the wrestling coach, I firmly believe that wrestling is a superior sport compared to others. Wrestling is unique in that it requires a combination of physical and mental toughness, agility, and strategy. It is a true test of an individual's character and willpower, as it requires intense training, dedication, and the ability to handle physical and mental stress. Unlike other sports where athletes rely heavily on equipment or teamwork, wrestling is a one-on-one battle, where the outcome is determined solely by the abilities of the wrestler. This means that success in wrestling is directly proportional to the effort put in by the wrestler. Moreover, wrestling teaches valuable life lessons such as discipline, perseverance, and humility. So, if you're looking for a sport that will help you develop as an athlete and a person, I highly recommend trying wrestling. It's an experience that you won't find anywhere else!

Varsity Track / Cross Country, Varsity Vollyball

As a coach who loves high school track, I often appreciate the combination of individual and team aspects the sport offers. Track allows athletes to showcase their skills and compete against one another in events ranging from sprints to distances, hurdles, and jumps. At the same time, each athlete's performance contributes to the overall success of the team, making it a true team sport. I'm also a coach who loves volleyball! I'm drawn to the dynamic and fast-paced nature of the sport. Volleyball requires a combination of physical abilities, such as quick reflexes, coordination, and strength, as well as mental skills, such as strategy, communication, and teamwork. These elements make for exciting and challenging matches that test the athletes' abilities and bring out the best in the players. Pick a sport and come for tryouts!

Varsity Football

I love football! The sport is just FUN! First, for me personally, working with young athletes and helping you develop your skills and reach your potential is a beyond rewarding. It's why I became a coach in the first place. Second, the competitive nature of the game, both in practices and on game days, it makes for a thrilling atmosphere! You hear it in the hallways and the quad. It's electric. Third, the camaraderie and ties formed with the team, players, and coaching staff; it creates a tight-knit community developing bonds of friendship that will last a lifetime. Finally, the opportunity to contribute to our larger school community through the excitement and spirit generated by our football program, it's definitely a source of pride.

Varsity Basketball, Lacrosse

As the high school basketball coach, I strongly encourage any girl who is interested to try out for the team. Basketball is a sport that can help you develop teamwork skills, physical fitness, and self-confidence. Being a part of a team means working together to achieve a common goal, which can be a valuable experience both on and off the court. The hard work and dedication required for success on the basketball court can also translate to success in other areas of your life. Additionally, playing basketball can provide you with a sense of pride and accomplishment as you strive to improve your skills and compete at a higher level. Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting out, our basketball team is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and have fun while doing it. We also offer the chance to tryout for our co-ed non-league Lacrosse Club.
